Spend summer in the Mudgee region
Visiting the Mudgee region this summer and need some travel inspiration? You’ve come to the right place. From top spots to cool down, to the best summer treats and where to find them, let us be your guide…
Go where the locals go
At local farm haunt, Old Wheels Grind, you can enjoy freshly baked cinnamon doughnuts (so good, you’ll want six!), locally roasted coffee, delicious gelato and sorbet (made from scratch with local ingredients), and freshly squeezed OJ. The kids will love playing in the decommissioned train and jeeps, while you wile away the morning under a shady umbrella.
Make a splash
Take the 3km return walking track along the Goulburn River to the local’s favourite watering hole, The Drip. Take a dip in the river, stand under the water dripping down the sandstone cliff face - and get the perfect shot for socials while you’re at it!
The Drip picnic area & walking track is situated 50 km (35 min) north of Mudgee on the Ulan-Cassilis Road.
Another favourite swimming spot? Ganguddy-Dunns Swamp, just beyond Rylstone. A beautiful, serene waterway on the Cudgegong River in Wollemi National Park, this is the place to swim, kayak with our friends at Southern Cross Kayaking, explore walking trails & camp.
Waterfront views
We might not be by the coast, but that doesn’t mean you should miss out on waterfront views. Head to wineries like Lowe Wines, Skimstone Wines or Yeates Wines to sip on crisp wines while overlooking the dam. Add a picnic platter and make an afternoon of it. No beach needed!
Wait for nightfall
If you’re looking to beat the heat, why not wait until the stars come out and book a visit to the Mudgee Observatory? See the night sky from a new perspective and avoid the midday sun at the same time.
Beach food in the bush
Craving fish and chips? Head to Market Street Takeaway for fresh, tasty fish, hot chips, burgers, and more. Pack the goods and dine at dusk in one of Mudgee’s local parks like Robertson Park or Lawson Park, for the ultimate twilight picnic.
Seek out cooler venues
Shopping is already a beloved Mudgee activity, but even better when those store walls keep you cool with crisp AC! Head to the likes of Willow Collective or Krysties for stylish apparel, Whatever Mudgee for homewares, art, trinkets and more, the Book Nest for a few good beach reads (sans beach!) and Good Day Lifestyle Co for the best of everything.
Catch up on culture
A visit to the Mudgee Arts Precinct isn’t just a good place to escape the heat - it’s also a vibrant home of art and culture. For the summer months, catch the Icons of Pop Art: Warhol and Lichtenstein exhibition, featuring the likes of Warhol’s iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans. It doesn’t hurt that there’s an air-conditioned cafe in the same vicinity.
